The Lumina Engine from Chevrolet

The Chevrolet Lumina played a very important role in the history of General Motors. It  competed with the much loved Ford Taurus and was the predecessor to the Chevrolet Impala. The Lumina most certainly did not disappoint because in its time on the market (1990-2001), it earned Chevrolet a lot of customers in the mid-sized car category. Although it had some success with the Lumina, Chevrolet constantly made changes to the engine in order to remain competitive but also to find the right balance of power and speed. The Lumina had four different sized engines (2.5, 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 liters), all of which underwent modifications.

The Lumina Engines
The 2.5 Liter Engine
2.5 liter
Four inline cylinders
Overhead valve
8 valves
Fuel injection
Three-speed automatic transmission
110 horsepower

The 2.5 liter engine did not make it past 1994 with the Chevrolet Lumina even though it had a reasonable amount of power. That power may not have translated into speed because the engine worked in coordination with a three-speed automatic transmission that may have been its limiting factor. Whatever the case, the 3.1 liter engine replaced the 2.5 liter version as the Lumina’s base engine and remained as such until Chevrolet removed the Lumina from the American market in 2002.

The 3.1 Liter Engine
3.1 liters
Overhead cam
V6 cylinders
12 valves
Fuel injection engine
Three-speed automatic transmission
135 horsepower
The 3.1 liter engine started with the Lumina in 1990 as the option to the 2.5 liter base engine. It then became the base engine apart from 1995, when Chevrolet decided not to allow the 2.5 liter engine to reprise its role. This engine gave a higher output (135 horsepower) and performed better than its predecessor while also setting the performance bar higher in the Lumina.

The 3.4 Liter Engine
3.4 liters
V6 cylinders
215 horsepower
This was the fastest and most powerful Lumina engine as it clocked 7.2 seconds at sixty miles per hour which was a whole 0.3 seconds faster than the
3.8 liter engine.
The 3.8 Liter Engine
The 3.8 liter engine was the only model that did not appear in the Lumina during its first generation from 1990-1994. Like the 3.4 liter engine, it also had V6 cylinders but failed to perform as powerfully as expected.
As the auto industry changed during the last ten decades of the millennium so did the Lumina engine. A used Lumina engine of 1990 was not the same as one made for a 1996 model. Chevrolet went to great lengths to provide refinement of these engines to make them competitive with those of other mid-sized cars.
