The Celebrity Engine from Chevrolet

The Chevrolet Celebrity was a mid-sized car produced by General Motors from 1982 to 1990. The Celebrity had three body styles – a 2 door coupe, a four door sedan and station wagon. During its eight years on the market, the interior and exterior designs of the celebrity did not change much but there were a total of four different engine types used in the various body styles. These engines (2.5, 2.8, 3.1 and 4.3 liters) all performed fairly well but only one of them was well received. The 3.1 liter engine was the most powerful of all the engines but it only came about in the 1990 model.

The 2.5 Liter Engine

The 2.5 liter engine remained the base engine for the Celebrity during its eight years of production. In the earlier models (those made before 1989), the 2.5 liter base engine only gave 98 horsepower which was a very unimpressive output. In the 1990 model, however, this engine produced 110 horsepower which was a 12 horsepower gain over the previous models.

The 2.8 Liter Engine

The 2.8 liter engine was the alternative to the base engine from 1982 to 1989. When the last Celebrity came on the market in 1990, it was no longer used as the engine option since the 3.1 liter version took its place. Another factor that influenced its replacement was the fact that General Motors repowered the 2.5 liter base engine to give more power, therefore, making the role of the 2.8 liter engine obsolete.

The 3.1 Liter Engine

By 1990, General Motors had discontinued all body styles but the station wagon and along with that change went a new 3.1 liter V6 engine option. The base 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine remained in its position and the 3.1 liter V6 replaced the 2.8 liter V6 engine as the option to the base engine. This was a good decision by Chevrolet because the Celebrity did not get enough power from the 2.5 or 2.8 liter engines and this new option provided 135 horsepower and 180 feet per pounds of torque.

The 4.3 Liter Engine

The 4.3 liter engine was a diesel engine that the Celebrity used in the 1984/1985 model. It was the shortest running Celebrity engine mainly because it was diesel and harder to handle than the other gas versions.
There were many things tried with the Celebrity engine but GM did not get it right until 1990 and by then it was too late. The base engine and its alternative did not provide enough power and the diesel engine did not make the intended wave. Overall, poor engine choices and designs became the detriment of the Celebrity.

The Lumina Engine from Chevrolet

The Chevrolet Lumina played a very important role in the history of General Motors. It  competed with the much loved Ford Taurus and was the predecessor to the Chevrolet Impala. The Lumina most certainly did not disappoint because in its time on the market (1990-2001), it earned Chevrolet a lot of customers in the mid-sized car category. Although it had some success with the Lumina, Chevrolet constantly made changes to the engine in order to remain competitive but also to find the right balance of power and speed. The Lumina had four different sized engines (2.5, 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 liters), all of which underwent modifications.

The 2.5 liter engine did not make it past 1994 with the Chevrolet Lumina even though it had a reasonable amount of power. Whatever the case, the 3.1 liter engine replaced the 2.5 liter version as the Lumina’s base engine and remained as such until Chevrolet removed the Lumina from the American market in 2002.
