The Chevrolet High Feature Engine

In 2004 General Motors introduced the High Feature V6 (HFV6), a new engine designed for its passenger vehicle lineup. The design and testing of the HFV6 was performed by a joint team of American and Australian auto engineers. In the United States, a team from Cadillac worked on development of the HFV6 and introduced it to the market under the hood of the 2004 Cadillac STS. In Australia, Holden named the new engine family Alloytec and released it first with the 2004 Holden VZ Commodore, a very popular full size sedan sold Down Under. Since then, the HFV6 has become a flagship Chevy engine.

The HFV6 replaced GM’s Ecotec family of Chevy engines. It is a lightweight 24 valve engine with various features across different models. Power, emissions control, and fuel efficiency are managed by sophisticated electronic controls. Early versions of the HFV6 were criticized as not having made a great leap in fuel economy. GM rectified the issue in later versions.

The HFV6 is currently produced in Australia, Canada, and in the United States (in Flint, Michigan). In the early days of the HFV6, the engine was included in several GM vehicles – but did not immediately replace earlier Chevy engines. Alloytec engines powered several cars around the world: Buick, Cadillac, Holden, Opel, Pontiac, Saturn, Daewoo, and even the luxurious and sporty Alfa Romeo Spider.

It took a few years for the HFV6 to become a full fledged Chevy engine. Chevrolet first rolled out the HFV6 tentatively in 2006, but not in the United States. The Chevrolet Captiva, a full size SUV popular in the United Kingdom was the first Chevy to be fitted with an Alloytec engine. In 2008, the HFV6 debuted as a Chevy engine under the hoods of the new Malibu sedan and the Equinox Sport crossover SUV. In 2010, the long awaited return of the All-American Chevy Camaro was fitted with a powerful HFV6 Alloytec engine. For this important event in GM’s history, the HFV6 was enhanced to a 6.2L V8 that can crank out 400HP at under 6000 rpm. Top of the line Camaros were assembled with this exclusive Chevy engine.

Even though the HFV6 is  relatively new among Chevy engines, the market for used and rebuilt Alloytecs is growing. Replacing damaged or worn out engines with used and rebuilt versions is considered a good option for car owners. In the United States, the practice of replacing failed engines with used ones was not very widespread until recent years. Used engines are usually salvaged from cars that are declared total losses by auto insurance companies. Specialty shops set out to carefully rebuild used engines in order to return them to the marketplace. The process involves extensive inspection and testing of the engine; as well as replacement of certain parts and machining of others.

Car owners who shun used engines do so under the impression that they are high-mileage engines. That is often not the case. In ecologically-conscious countries such as Costa Rica, a vehicle owner may opt to rebuild and overhaul the engine of the car they presently own after hundreds of thousands of miles. Purchasing a used engine is different than overhauling in the sense that a failed engine is actually being replaced. In fact, many used engines come from low mileage cars that were declared total losses due to the reduced market value of the vehicle at the time of the loss.

Used Chevy engine such as the durable HFV6 will come with rebuilt warranties, and they are often more affordable than buying a new car. They are a very sensible option for Chevy vehicle owners.

Voltec Chevrolet Orlando in the Works

Voltec is GM’s name for its Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle technology, something that will be offered to consumers when its first electric vehicle hits the market in late 2010. Featuring a lithium-ion battery pack, GM expects that sales for its Volt line will be decent, but the automaker understands that the technology needs to be expanded to power other vehicles, hence the news that the Chevy Orlando could be next.

The All New Chevy Orlando MPV

The Chevrolet Orlando hasn’t hit the market yet, but when it does it will be a four-door, five-passenger compact multi-purpose vehicle built on GM’s Delta II platform. That same platform will also underpin the Chevy Volt which means that it won’t take a whole lot for GM to offer Voltec on select editions of the Orlando. The standard Orlando model will be powered by a 2.4L I4 engine paired with a variety of transmission choices while the Voltec Orlando would include most of the same components powering the Volt. That move would save GM money while offering shoppers something else besides just the Volt sedan.

GM is also exploring other uses for Voltec including creating an all-new Cadillac model based on the Converj concept. The Converj has been well received at recent auto show displays, an attractive coupe which would make for a nice edition to the Cadillac line.

Expanding Voltec Usage

GM may also extend Voltec to Buick and GMC in a bid to make full use of the technology. Unlike other pure electric cars, Voltec includes a supplemental 1.4L I4 engine which helps to extend the vehicle’s range. The chief complaint amongst EV buyers is that most cars will only go 60-100 miles before needing recharging. With Voltec, drivers can go sixty miles before the small four cylinder engine kicks in.

One of the big reasons for GM to consider other uses for Voltec is to help lower the cost for the Chevy Volt. Before government rebates kick in, GM says that the Volt will sell for more than $ 40,000 which will price the car about every Chevy model except for the Corvette and its big sport/utility vehicles. Even with a $ 7500 federal tax rebate in play, the cost of the Volt will still be at least $ 35,000, perhaps more if certain features are selected. By expanding Voltec to other models, the price of the Volt could drop over the next few years which will be good news for consumers who want to embrace the technology but can’t afford the high prices.

Big savings on Chevrolet cars

During the last week of February, Chevrolet released their ‘12-plate’ deals with savings across the entire range, which included the Spark, New Aveo, Cruze Hatchback, Orlando and Captiva. The Chevrolet deals were only available at participating dealers until 31st March 2012, which I unfortunately missed out on, as I saw the advert one week to late.

For the Chevrolet Spark 1.0+, there was a £1,500 saving off its usual list price, which starts at £6,975. This car would have been perfect for my daughter, who had just passed her driving test, as it has many great standard equipment including a CD-radio with MP3 and USB input, electric front windows and six airbags.

For the new Chevrolet Aveo, there was up to a £1000 off, so the price of the new Aveo 1.2 LS was £8,995. For a new car that price was brilliant but I could not have bought it for her, as the price is over my budget.

The Chevrolet Cruze 1.6 LS 5-door Hatchback was available from just £11,995, which is up to £2,000 worth of savings against the list price. With the Cruze came many standard features which my daughter would have appreciated, including air conditioning, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and follow me home headlights.

Even though I had no interest in the seven-seater Chevrolet Orlando, I was still curious to know how much customers could save, and was surprised that it was savings of up to £2,500, which made the 1.8 LS model, just £13,995.

The biggest saving was on the Chevrolet Captiva SUV, which has around £4,000 worth of reductions off its list price, so the Captiva 2.2 LS cost £17,995. All vehicles in that offer came with Chevrolet’s five-year warranty, which included 5 years or 100,000 miles of comprehensive cover and one year’s Chevrolet roadside assistance.

The Greatest Chevrolets On The List

There’s absolutely nothing more American than Chevrolet. For 100 years, Chevy and its bowtie logo have identified American motoring, both on the road and on the race track. Established by well-known racecar driver Louis Chevrolet and ousted GM founder William C. Durant on November 3, 1911, the auto company has now witnessed ten decades of success.

Two years later, Louis Chevrolet had distinctions with Durant and sold Durant his share of the firm. A year later, Chevy’s income financed Durant’s repurchase of General Motors. He grew to be president of GM and Chevrolet was quickly merged into GM in 1918. In 1913, its well-known bowtie logo was used after Durant liked a wall paper pattern with a comparable design in a French hotel. At least that’s how the story goes. In celebration of Chevy’s 100th birthday we’ve drawn up this list of the greatest Chevys ever, the six cars that have done the most to develop Chevrolet’s place in auto culture. The vehicles that have motivated people to tattoo the bowtie emblem to different parts of their bodies.

That means we did not limit this list to production cars. Instead the list involves race cars — both those according to production Chevys and those only powered by Chevrolet racing engines — concept cars, showcars, prototypes and even movie cars. Is your favorite on the list?

1. 1971 Corvette ZR2: Only 12 of these race-ready ‘Vettes were built with 425-hp, LS6 454 big-block V8s under their hoods.

2. 1973 Firenza Can Am: Just 100 were built in South Africa and based on the small British Viva coupe. The Firenza Can Am was equipped with the 1969 Camaro Z/28’s 302 small-block V8. It’s the one legendary Chevrolet that never made it to America.

3. 1977 Camaro Z/28: After two years of no Z/28s at all, it returned with a new emphasis on handling and only 170 hp from its 350 four-barrel V8.

4. 1983 Monte Carlo SS: Designed for NASCAR, with a sloping nose that added aggression to the street car. A 175-hp 5.0-liter V8 backed that up.

5. 1988 Callaway Sledgehammer: In 1988, John Lingenfelter drove this twin-turbo, 898-hp monster on the 7.5-mile oval at Ohio’s Transportation Research Center at 254.76 mph. It drove to the test from Connecticut on public roads.

6. 2006 Trailblazer SS: With 391 horsepower from its 6.0-liter LS2 V8, this was one of the least sensible SUVs ever built. Massive burnouts and zero to 60 in 6.3 seconds.
